Dirt and Soil

Today we went outside and looked at the dirt to see what soil is made up of. Some ideas we came up with were worms, leaves, grass, rocks, sand, spiders, and of course, the ever present toilet humor of Kindergartners, poop (not that there was any outside, but it came up in the book we read about how worms help gardens). We had a serious discussion though about how it fertilizes the ground, and how plants can use it to grow big and strong. 

 Some of the students discovered that roots are also found in the dirt. They thought that was pretty neat.
